storytelling

flickers is all about storytelling.

It's a couple of mediums combined together to produce powerful messages in this digital age.

Everybody who lives on this earth has at least a story to tell. Everybody. - People on the street, hawkers, beggars, philosophers, moms, dads, policemen, teachers, kids. Everyone of us has gone through some stages in our lives and we all have stories that we wanted to share with at least someone.

But there are stories worth telling, and then there're stories worth sharing.

flickers is about stories worth sharing.

Stories that inspire us to be better at whatever we're doing, to strive harder at whatever we're facing. Human beings do the unthinkable, and we posess the ability to go beyond our physical abilities. There are success stories, stories of people overcoming obstacles, stories of hardship and strong-will, stories of creativities and craftmanships.

But above all, these are stories worth sharing. Told by those we called flickers.

Always appreciative of the good things he comes across, be it a work of art, a piece of music or just a plain piece of drift wood.

James Cheuk graduated with a TEC Diploma in Mechanical and Production Engineering at Carshalton College in Surrey, UK in 1983. He later, went to Switzerland, where he graduated in Hospitality & Tourism Management at “Les Roches” Bluche sur Sierre in Crans-Montana.

He did a 2 year internship at Rotisserie de la Reine in Crans Montana serving the best lobsters next to a world class golf course and work as a baker and patissier at Chez Sordet in Lutry, Lausanne before returning to Malaysia in 1986.

He started a 15 year career in the Malaysian tourism industry from 1987. First at Discovery Tours (Sabah) as Operations Manager, in 1991, Director of Operations at Exotic Borneo (Sabah) and finally in 1995, joined Diethelm Borneo Expeditions as General Manager. He operated the Jesselton Tourism Centre, a licensed tourist guide training school till 2002.

In 2001, in conjunction with the 1st Anniversary City Day Celebration and with the support of the Kota Kinabalu City Hall, he organized the “Cultural Rendezvous in Borneo” drum festival, inviting drum groups from Zimbabwe, New Orleans, Trinidad & Tobago and Malaysia’s own, Asia Beat headed by Asia’s renowned drummer, Lewis Pragasam, for a week long musical carnival in the city.

James’ extensive knowledge of Sabah’s Tourism products and terrain allows him to gain access to people and places, while his in-depth and critical knowledge of the local culture and ethnic races makes him an invaluable source for research. His love for good story-telling has enabled him to dig deeper into the heart of various issues.

With his critical mind, we have found the reasons to getting projects off the ground and with equal passion and precision.
